But here’s the thing – when we eat the wrong foods, too much or too little food, or the wrong combinations of foods, we end up diminishing our agni. And that can lead to poor digestion, which is never a good thing. You see, undigested food creates toxins known as “ama”, which then travel through the bodily channels and create disease and illness.
So, what can you do to keep our agni strong and our digestion healthy?
Well, according to Dr Kranti Vardhan, each person requires a different type of diet depending on their body type. For example, if you have a strong vata constitution or are suffering from vata imbalances, you may want to focus on moist foods to counteract the effects of dryness in your body. On the other hand, if you’re dominant in kapha, you may want to choose light, drier, and easy-to-digest foods to counteract the heaviness of kapha.
But it’s not just about what you eat – it’s also about when you eat and what foods are best for the time of day and season. And let’s not forget that different foods have different effects on our body. Some foods can be heavy, while others can be light. And some are hot, while others are cold. And when it comes to snacking, it’s best to avoid it altogether and stick to three meals a day. This gives your body time to digest properly and helps prevent the buildup of toxins.
- Eat Your Full At Lunch: According to Ayurveda it’s best to do it at lunchtime. This is when your digestive fire, or Agni, is the strongest, so your body can handle heavier foods more easily.
What Foods to Avoid According to Ayurveda?
It’s not just what you eat but also how you combine your foods that is important in the Ayurvedic Diet. Poor food combinations can reduce your digestive fire and create toxins immediately. So, pay attention to how you’re combining your foods.
Here are some basic rules to follow when it comes to food combinations:
- Don’t mix milk and fruit or yogurt and milk.
- Avoid having milk when eating radishes, cherries, tomatoes, potatoes, bananas, melons, fish, meat, eggs, citrus fruits, and bread.
- Don’t mix any type of melon with other foods.
- Avoid eating fresh fruit with meals.
- Avoid eating milk products with animal protein, for example, milk and eggs, meat and cheese, fish and cream.
