One of the most common sexual problems, Premature Ejaculation is when ejaculation (expulsion of semen) happens sooner than a man or his partner would like while having sex. It is also known as rapid ejaculation, premature climax or early ejaculation. It may not be a cause for worry but it can be frustrating if it makes sex less enjoyable and affect relationships.
One out of five men is reported to have experienced early ejaculation at some point in their life. When it happens regularly and impacts sexual pleasure, it becomes a medical problem.
The key symptoms of premature ejaculation include –
- Ejaculation that occurs with little sexual stimulation
- Poor control over ejaculation leading to decreased sexual pleasure
- Feelings of guilt, embarrassment and frustration
There are many biological reasons that are stated for premature ejaculation. In addition to that, emotional factors like depression, stress and anxiety can aggravate the problem.
Although the main reason cannot be determined, one of the following physiological causes may lead to premature ejaculation –
- Abnormal level of hormones
- Abnormal level of neurotransmitters or brain chemicals
- Inflammation or infection on prostate or urethra
Psychological factors are more common which may include –
- Sexual abuse
- Poor body image or self-esteem
- Early sexual experiences
- Worrying about ejaculating early
- Dissatisfaction with the relationship
Erectile dysfunction, which is another sexual problem, can be a reason for early ejaculation. Anxious thoughts regarding maintaining an erection can act as obstructions in attaining sexual pleasure. Interpersonal issues in the relationship may also contribute to the problem.
The solutions for male sexual problems can be found in Ayurveda thousands of years ago and even has a separate section for reproductive health called Vajeekarana. Ayurveda recognises the role of the nervous system, cardiovascular system, and psychological aspects for male sexual performance and fertility. Herbal remedies, appropriate lifestyle, and nutritious diet are part of the Ayurvedic treatment for treating these problems.
In Ayurveda, Vata is considered as life and vitality and free of all disorder. Shukra is the tissue element that is considered as the essence of all other tissue elements and nourishes the vital essence. Premature ejaculation is caused due to aggravated Vata. Shukra (semen or reproductive system) is an important body of tissues with generative properties and the functions of Dhairya (courage), Cyavana (ejaculation) and Preeti (pleasure). The Prakupita Vata enters Shukra Vata and causes early ejaculation. The Shukragata Vata includes the gatatva concept which comprises of ejaculatory as well as seminal impairments.
The divisions of Shukragata Vata are early ejaculation (Shukra Ativega), delayed ejaculation (Shukra Avega), incapable of impregnating (Nishphalatvam) etc. Ayurveda not only has solutions for cure but also can prevent the disease too. Ayurvedic treatments for Shukragata Vata include Vatahara chikitsa, administering Vajeekarana and herbal medicines for Shukrastambhaka (for delaying early ejaculation).
Vardhan Ayurveda Hospital, Hyderabad carries out Abhyangam (oil therapy on the whole body), Swedam (medicated steam), Elakizhi (leaf bundle massage), Pizhichil (Sarvanga dhara or oil bath), Shali Shastika Pinda Swedam (Navarakizhi), Shirodhara (steaming oil on head) etc as treatments for premature ejaculation.
The Vajeekarana medicines along with Vajikarana Chikitsa are also given for providing strength and vigour to improve the reproductive potentiality.
Counselling is also effective for people who are dealing with one’s own fears and anxieties. In such cases, therapy sessions are helpful in delaying ejaculation.
